CEEC-Constructed Moragolla Hydropower Plant Dam Topped Out in Sri Lanka

On August 12, the dam of the Moragolla Hydropower Plant in Sri Lanka, constructed by China Gezhouba Group No. 2 Engineering Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of CEEC, was successfully topped out with the pouring of the final concrete batch. This critical milestone paves the way for sluice gate closure and reservoir impoundment scheduled in November 2025.

Located 22 km south of Kandy District within Central Province, Sri Lanka, the Moragolla Hydropower Plant is equipped with a horizontal axial-flow turbine generator unit, boasting an installed capacity of 30.2 MW and an annual electricity output of 97.6 million kWh. It features a 37-meter-high concrete gravity dam with a 236-meter-long crest, forming a reservoir with a total storage capacity of 3 million cubic meters.

As a key livelihood project in Sri Lanka, the Moragolla Hydropower Plant has created over 1,000 local jobs during construction, while also training a skilled workforce of managers and technicians, contributing significantly to regional socioeconomic development. Upon completion, the plant will alleviate electricity shortages, supplying power for approximately 160,000 residents, and provide irrigation water to enhance agricultural productivity, ultimately improving living standards in the surrounding communities.
